This new piece written for BRuCH advocates for the normalization of talking about pleasure, sex positivity and consciousness of one´s own desires. It is a prayer and a provocation at the same time, investigating different modes of desire and a variety of female roles/indetities through the manipulation of the human voice. It is written for 5 performers and their voices and blindfolds. “Safe word” is an expression, a code word that is originally used in dark rooms, sexual playrooms, where the submissive would like to communicate their physical or emotional state to a dominant, typically when approaching or crossing a physical, emotional or moral boundary. But it also refers to a safe space, a safe zone, where we are all welcome and encouraged to communicate with each other, feel accepted without conditions, where we don´t have to explain or apologize for our bodies, our pleasures, our origins, our gender, our skin colour, ourselves.
“Safe word is for me a very expressive and extreme symbol of communication. A cry, a scream for stop, an exclamation mark to change something. So therefore I invite you to go to your “dark room” and put on blindfolds, enter a space where you are all alone and you can only listen. Blindfolds can be part of this sexroom culture, but for me, they also stand for imagination, play, games that children play. Just by closing your eyes, you can create any world.
The piece “safe word” wants to challenge your senses, you beliefs, discriminative mechanisms or taboos. So I am both inviting you to enter this imaginary safe space where all words feel safe by covering your eyes and at the same time, obviously enjoy a new sensory experience.”
